I came to therapy the way many practitioners do: as a client.
On my own healing journey I grew fascinated with the therapeutic process – the reasons why we struggle and the unique ways in which each of us can heal. I was inspired by the power of the therapeutic alliance between client and therapist – by how that trusted, transformative relationship is built and sustained. As a keen meditator, I also gravitated towards the study of hypnosis as a way of engaging the unconscious in the process of healing.
Before becoming a therapist I was a writer, marketer and filmmaker. It’s not that great a leap from writing to therapy. Communication and listening are vital to both, as are imagination, genuineness, and the ability to step outside one’s own frame of reference and see things the way another does. Together, client and therapist spend ample time unravelling complex plots, imagining new realities and rewriting “inner scripts” that are no longer helpful.
Embarking on therapy can feel like a big step, and doing so is a sign of strength. I’m forever in awe of clients’ resilience, creativity and courage, however great their challenges at the outset. Helping you work towards your therapeutic goals is an honour, an adventure and an education.
